Paycom Jim Thorpe Award
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award annually recognizes the best defensive back in college football. The award is based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character. As such, it is considered one of the most coveted awards in college football.
This list includes 46 of the nation’s best defensive backs, representing 10 conferences and 1 Independent. The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee who compiles a list of 30-50 players. This list is not final and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses.
Alohi Gilman-After foregoing his Sophomore season in 2017, Gilman had a monster Junior year for the Fightin’ Irish. Gilman started in all 12 games. He had 76 tackles, 3 TFL’s, 3 break-ups and two interceptions. A season high 10 tackles came against USC.
Probably one of the biggest moments in that USC game was his halftime spirited message to his team. The Irish trailed at the half and Alohi definitely provided the spark.
Gilman could end up with the “C” on his jersey as he brings energy and tenacity to the Safety position. Teaming up with his fellow Senior Devin Studstill, the Irish hope that the secondary will be as strong and even better than last season.
Julian Love as a Cornerback was on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list in 2018 and was a semifinalist.
